Surgery Medical Coding Specialist

Our team is seeking an experienced Surgical Coding Specialist for a remote opportunity supporting healthcare operations. While this position is fully remote, candidates must live locally in the Indianapolis area to attend occasional onsite meetings, training sessions, or team collaboration events as needed. The Surgical Coding Specialist will be responsible for reviewing surgical documentation, assigning accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes, and ensuring coding compliance with payer and regulatory requirements. This role requires a strong understanding of surgical coding guidelines, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.

Shift: Monday - Friday (a few shift options)

• 8a-5p
• 6a-2p
• 10a-6p

Key Responsibilities:

• Review and analyze operative reports and medical records to assign accurate surgical codes
• Apply CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding guidelines for a variety of surgical specialties
• Ensure coding is compliant with federal regulations, payer requirements, and internal policies
• Identify and resolve coding edits, denials, and documentation issues
• Work collaboratively with providers, billing teams, and other departments to clarify documentation and support reimbursement accuracy
• Maintain productivity and quality standards in a remote work setting
• Stay current on coding updates, payer changes, and industry best practices

Requirements

• 2+ years of surgical coding experience required
• Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems
• Experience coding for multiple surgical specialties preferred
• Relevant coding certification required, such as CPC, CCS, or CCS-P
• Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems and encoder software
• Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
• Ability to work independently while remaining responsive and collaborative in a remote team environment
• Must reside in the Indianapolis, IN area
